Multi-Dome Structure

This 100yr old multi-dome concrete structure in Estonia was investigated for stability. As can be seen, the structure consists of 3 spherical and 7 smaller cylindrical domes around it. The stability of cylindrical dome was noted to be more critical than the stability of spherical dome.

RFEM Advantages:

Curved surface modelling feature of RFEM was very handy to create several adjacent domed roof surfaces.

Surface merge function of RFEM was particualrly useful to create common boundaries between these spherical surfaces. This allowed for modelling of needed structural continuity in the multi-dome structure.

Once again intelligent meshing capability of curved surfaces was free of problems. 

Another significant edge was utilization of 3rd-Order analysis and imperfection creation capability. In addition analysis incorporated long term effects of creep and cracking to account for concrete degradation.
